The world is covered in a thin coating of excrement. It is everywhere. Nothing is truly clean unless it was just removed from an autoclave.

I once found DH in the kitchen cleaning mud off his shoes with the brush I use for washing dishes.

PP here. Sorry, still so horrified I forgot to answer your original question. I would clean the pot like crazy but keep it.

There has to be some basic educational videos about food hygiene somewhere although I don't know if you DH is open to learn? Geez, Sesame Street or something like that?

I'm with the dishwasher/ boiling crowd for the pot. But a point you should make to DH is that the time the brush spends in the kitchen pre- boiled is the problem. Even of just carried in, stuff could fall off onto countertops etc.(just as it does with cat paws as pp mentioned)
