Said the speeding jerk.

You get what you get.

So you are telling me you NEVER speed? You're probably the asshole who drives 5 mph under the speed limit in the left lane.

+1

They definitely sound like those assholes who sit in the left lane just to "show everyone a lesson." They are actually the ones who are going to cause an accident one day!

OP, yes, it's a racket. Definitely get a lawyer. Probably needs to be a local one (part of the racket).

Have they told you this while slowly driving in the left lane? You are projecting and getting angry at someone who may have completely different intentions if any at all.

What are these other intentions if they are illegally just hanging out in the left lane instead of using it to pass?

You are on the Internet. No one is in any lane, and no one has said anything about driving slowly in the left lane, merely pointed out that some of you admit to driving at obscene speeds. You can get as huffy as you like, but you speeders are dangerous. High speed accidents are awful.

83 in a 70 zone is hardly obscene.

Yes, it is. 83 is obscene, period. Good God. I hope you do time if you're the OP. Absolutely no contrition in your posts. You're carrying on like *you* are the victim. Jesus.

It's really not obscene. If you ever left the hellhole that is VA then you'd realize that.

I got a speeding ticket in the middle of nowhere. I hired one of the lawyers who contacted me and she was fantastic and she got me off.

Also, immediately contact AAA and get yourself into a Driver Improvement Course. You can take one this weekend. It will take all day Saturday. Then you get a certificate saying you took the course. Send it to the lawyer you hired and she can present it to the judge saying "Here. Look. This person is genuinely sorry and has taken concrete actions to amend their ways." THis is what I did -- and it worked.

Trying to deflect from your own dangerous behaviors? Get out of the left lane, asshole.

Anonymous wrote:Sorry this happened to you OP. It is DEFINITELY a racket - it is how a lot of those small towns make their budgets! Apparently there was a lot of outrage directed at the practice in the past couple of years, and cops now have discretion to just give you a speeding ticket if you are under 85 (so no longer mandatory reckless over 80). I know this for a fact, b/c I lucked out and the cop gave me a speeding ticket in the same circumstances (all the while explaining his discretion). It was expensive, but JUST speeding. Unfortunately, looks like you got a jerk for a cop. From all the internet "research" I did, it really does seem like the best course is to hold your nose, pull out your wallet, and pay a local lawyer to represent you. Very likely outcome is speeding (especially since cop could have done that in the first place). Jason Wyrth had to do some jail time b/c I think he was in the high 90s (plus sped away from the cop) . . .apparently anything in the 90s and the judges will make you do jail time.

GOOD LUCK!

Cops have always had discretion to do whatever they want at a traffic stop. I was stopped over 5 years ago in Rockbridge County (out on I-81, sounds like same area as OP asking for rec's in Lexington/Rockbridge) and clocked at 79 in a 65. I was definitely going over 80, because I had my cruise control set over 80. So either the cop *used his discretion* or I successfully braked a bit before he clocked me (more unlikely).

OP, ignorance of the laws in VA is not an excuse. Stay in Maryland!

Well, they all should be ticketed then.

For those of you who insist that anything over 80 is reckless are either 75yo geezers or have no experience driving on open, flat, empty highway. I'm from Montana where the speed limit is 75. I admit, I wasn't paying attention to my speed, and I don't tend to use cruise control (something that I will definitely be changing!)

This isn't Montana. More people. More cars. faster speed= more accidents.

Has anyone gone through this? What's the best course of action? Apparently this is considered a criminal offense and will go on my record, and possibly getting me jail time?? It's been a week and I've gotten at least four letters from area (middle of nowhere VA) law firms who specialize in traffic violations. WTF? Is this some sort of racket? How did they even get my info. This whole situation seems unreal and kind of shady

It isn't a racket is you were going over 80. Next time slow down. It is about safety.

OP. I would definitely use the above as your opening statement. It will come to be known as "The Montana Defense," and very understandable given the caliber of schools in that state

You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 50 mph is like paying an additional $0.17 per gallon for gas.

You sound like the type of unsavory person who would go 83 miles an hour. I hope you have to lay a massive fine and jail time. You are now a criminal who was caught
