To those who have misused their free speech in such a reprehensible way, I have a message for you. You are disgraceful. You have violated all that we stand for. You should not have the privilege of calling yourselves "Sooners." Sooners are not racist. Real Sooners are not bigots. Real Sooners believe in equal opportunity. Real Sooners treat all people with respect. Real Sooners love each other take care of each other like family members.
Effective immediately, all ties and affiliations between this University and the local SAE chapter are hereby severed. I direct that the house be closed and that members will remove their personal belongings from the house by midnight tomorrow. Those needing to make special arrangements for positions shall contact the Dean of Students.
All of us will redouble our efforts to create the strongest sense of family and community. We vow that we will be an example to the entire country of how to deal with this issue. There must be a zero tolerance for racism everywhere in our nation.
President Boren
Strong. I like this.

Does anyone monitor the hate speech of black youths with similar intensity or do we only play "gotcha" with white boys these days?
Only whites can be racist
To clarify (though I am not the PP) --
Anybody can hate anybody.
Anybody can be bigoted against anybody.
Anybody can be racist against minorities.
There is no such thing as racism against whites.
I am so glad someone else posted this. I always feel like I'm the only one explaining the differences between racism, prejudice, and discrimination.
Chase yourself in definitional circles as long as you wish, but anyone who is honest knows there is racism, prejudica and discrimination against whites by some non-whites.
Racism is distinguished from the other concepts because it denotes power to harm, oppress, and devalue. There is none of this against whites in this country.

The South terrifies me. I know there is racism everywhere, but there's a really gross combination of overtness, and Southern politeness, that freaks me out.
Oklahoma is not in the south.
Yes it is.
Anonymous wrote:why are some of you concerned with the tit for tat? cant you take this episode in isolation and just say its bad without having to wonder aloud about why another episode didnt supposedly get attention?
when you do that, you come across as being ok and/or justifying that its ok for a group of frat guys can sing a song about lynching blacks and using the n word. this is and should not be ok on any level. why do you feel the need to find some counter to this for the hell of it?
take it in isolation, say its bad, and move on. if you think its acceptable to call black the n word to to chant about lynching them, just say youre ok with it. you are already anonymous. nobody knows who you really are and you dont have to claim you have a black friend or that you arent racist. fess up and say you are cool with it and try to defend it. dont try to have it both ways

Also good the fraternity got suspended, so far I know the UCLA students are still in student government and it was "just a teaching moment"/

Obviously people of all ethnicity and groups can be racist.
FYI I find both incidents repulsive.
