How is rich defined? Is it defined by income or wealth. I read the list, but that is income which one can lose quickly if displaced by job. Wealth does not suddenly disappear. So how is rich defined and how are posters defining prestige?

I'm in Chevy Chase and can get to a nice restaurant in Baltimore in 45 minutes. Much less to a nice restaurant in DC.

Well as a mom of an STA alum I'll chime in on this discussion. I knew of none who lived in Capital Hill or Kalorama and only a few in Georgetown or Burleith. Most lived in suburbs in the city or CC, Bethesda, Potomac, Mclean, Great Falls.

Since PP didn't know how to spell Kalorama correctly, forgive me if I don't view the hyper-ventilating about the "staff" as dispositive on what passes for "prestigious" in these parts.
I think this might be a slight against the subsidized foreign types who live in KalOrama. Remember, when the French ambassador had to vacate his KalOrama digs, he went to Wesley Heights.

The wealthiest folks are identifiable and where they live is known. The Lerners are in Chevy Chase, Md. David Rubinstein is in McLean. Jeff Zients, Wesley Heights (in the original Marriott house no less). The Marriotts are themselves in Avenel and Potomac. The Caffritz's are in Kent, G'town and Wesley Heights. This game involves hundreds of millions and those who have it are in places that don't involve guesswork.

Georgetown, yes, but lots of young families we know that live there live in very modest townhouses -sacrificing size fir location. So everything isn't on the "arrived" scale there. I'd definitely say Mass Heights, Kalorama, Wesley Heights, Spring Valley, The part of Woodley Park directly surrounding the Cathedral.

There's pretty concrete evidence that the people in the town of Chevy Chase, the Village of Chevy Chase, Somerset, Martin's additions, and a few other areas of Chevy Chase, have higher incomes and networth (aka "richer") than the people in Chevy Chase, DC. That includes the pudgy North Face moms.
I would say that the most prestigious areas in DC would be Georgetown, Kalorama, and over off Foxhall Road.
Agreed. Ch chase dc is lovely middle class folks . . . but the idea that ch ch md has wealthier people than Kalorama or Wesley Heights is just silly. And Bethesda - home of the north face chubs - is hardly a status-y address.
