Rudy made an idiotic statement.
It was funny to watch the reaction of the rest of the clown circus aka Walker and Jindal. As usual the Republican nomination process seems to be a race to the bottom of the barrel.

PP again. My husband was bullied relentlessly by his sibling, and his parents did little to stop it. Trust me when I tell you this has affected his decision-making time and again, affected our marriage, and shaped his personality.

Childhoods matter.

Most educated people would know that Giuliani was not mayor in the 80s. You are probably referring to another art exhibit from 1999. Since these facts are so cloudy to you, the average liberal can hardly be expected to recall them.

I am white and I was not raised to buy American and be rah rah American. So I have no bloody clue WTF Guiliani is talking about. We weren't all raised with this idea that America can do no wrong. I'm proud but I'm no nationalist and I don't subscribe to the idea of exceptionalism.

One can disagree with Obama without casting aspersions on him. Giuliani's comments were asinine and the unwillingness of people like Scott Walker to just disown what he said does not speak well of him.

The only way there will be a Republican president the next go around is if moderates, independents and some Democrats can be persuaded to vote for a Republican. Giuliani's ridiculous remarks and the unwillingness of key Republicans to repudiate them will merely turn off the very voters who will make a difference.

To quote Jindal: "Republicans should not be seen as the stupid party".


It seems that Bobby J has forgotten his own advice. This week his office issued a press release captioned "Gov. Jindal refuses to condemn Mayor Guiliani."

I am a Dem, but I had liked Guiliani for a a long time. He was a good US attorney and a good mayor. I thought he handled 9-11 well and admired his toughness on addressing crime and other problems in NYC that in the 80s had seemed intractable. Rudy is like the anti-DiBlasio and I say that approvingly.

That said, I no longer admire Guliani. He had become increasingly shrill and bigoted in his speech. Now I think this formerly rational guy has become unglued.

You don't have to take Cashill's word. Go find "Fugitive Days" by Ayers. It is written in the same voice as "Dreams." Any English major knows that voice is hard to copy.

I agree that Rudy's comments are not exactly racist, but he does play the theme of "foreign-ness" when it comes to Obama (doesn't love America, doesn't understand our country, etc.). There have been strains of this in the GOP for a long time -- Barrack Hussein Obama, the birth certificate obsession, suggestions that Obama is really a Muslim. Most first and second generation Italians were raised with a very strong work ethic b/c their parents did indeed love this country.

My father, grandfather and uncle faced discrimination - weren't allowed to enter a southern diner b/c their skin was too dark, and other such nonsense. However, they worked their asses off and instilled in us a strong work ethic. Some of use went directly into the workforce/a trade; others graduated with college degrees.

So while we're still tied to our cultural roots, we're American, too. This isn't the case with family members in Italy, however, who tend to criticize how we live.
