This was my first thought, because I know somene like this. He's a colleague and friend, and simply really enjoys amazing food and wine. He's been very generous in taking me out to dinner several times, and the bills are astronomical, but it's what he enjoys and he's definitely not trying to impress me or get into my pants.
I realize it's different in OP's case because it's actually a date, but my first thought was that the guy may be similar to my friend.
