On My daughter's 5th birthday she wanted an Easter basket (birthday in Sept.), Superman, and a BIG BLACK cat, not for Halloween, she just loved black cats. Go figure. She was happy and she is in 1st year of college now and still tells me it was her favorite birthday party and cake.

Stupid, stupid, stupid! Have any kind of cake your child wants! Find a new friend.

You should make everything mismatched: ballerina cake. Dora plates. Fairy napkins. Princess favor bags. You will blow her Pinterest-infected mind.

OP, the cake does match the theme. The theme is "4 year old girl birthday party." The things which match this are "bounce house" and "ballerina cake."

I want this cake even more than I want a bouncy bounce house cupcake cake on springs. Actually what I really want is a bouncy "Increased Cooperation in NATO" cupcake cake on springs -- or would that send a mixed message, possibly leading to hostilities?

This type of thread is the reason I waste so much time on DCUM.

Come on. Close friends trust you to say what they really think.
Of course childrens' bday cake and decorations can look tacky to adults but it's for the child's benefit not the adults!

Tell your friend that it is thematic. It's not a ballerina, it's a circus acrobat in a tutu.

Tell your friend that she can have whatever birthday cake she wants for her own birthday.

Listen to your friend. This is completely tacky. Can't believe you even had to ask.

She's a close friend and was curious as to what I'm doing for my child's party this year.

Just do whatever your child and you are comfortable with.
