I think sometimes it's hard to resurrect a friendship if it's just the person's personality which can't be changed. At least that is why I cut off one friendship- the issues were just so seriously ingrained and she wasn't going to change

I would imagine that there had been a lot of similar comments that happened long before that one. That was a big deal for her and you couldn't give it the respect it deserved. It was probably her last straw.

You sound like my mother. She says this kind of shit and expects everyone to just roll over and take it because she "didn't mean to hurt their feelings" and they "should know she isn't really like that." Except she is. My brother speaks to her a couple times a year and I am thinking of spacing myself because I don't want her toxicity to rub off on my kids. Not that she cares, she complains if she has to watch them for five minutes.
