Anything else: Out of our house (and with your own money--not even as a birthday gift)
That's how my parents handled piercings, and it worked beautifully. No preteen angst/fear about the piercing, and I knew that I could get another when I turned 18. By the time I turned 18, I wasn't interested in piercings, tattoos, etc--I think multiple piercings and "body art" looks trashy. My parents were/are brilliant!
My mom had my first piercings done when I was around 6months I think.

Oh, I should have also said that I, as the parent, am not responsible for helping clean the piercings, which is one of the other reasons to wait til 10.
I've never had an argument. On the other hand, my mother had to wait til 16 and I had to wait til 13, and we both were only allowed one set, so I think that has a lot to do with it.

My thinking is that I know how I took care of my (single set) piercings... I didn't, not like I should have. By 10, a child is more aware of their own body and hygiene, has more autonomy. I would never think of altering a child's body just because they are my child; it's their body and their choice, but I think 10 is an appropriate age to think of the long-term consequences, even if the only ones they see are turning the earrings twice a day minimum and spending time cleaning them, for a month! Horrors! I think three years in between is also a good gauge for them, they have time to decide if they actually want to do it or if they just want to be like their friends.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that but I find it interesting as many parents pierce their daughters ears long before 10 years old yet they would not even consider a double or triple piercing at 13 and 16. What's your thinking?Anonymous wrote:My rules:

This is not a big deal. I had piercings up my ears in high school, including the cartilage. My parents allowed me to as long as I took care of the piercings. I grew out of the phase and let the holes (except my original single piercings) close when I got to college. It was probably one of the least harmless forms of self expression I could have chosen at the time.
