Europe is too far for four days--half your time would be traveling.
Caribbean, Bermuda, Quebec City, New Orleans, NYC....
My #1 vote is for Paris or Italy! Take the red eye, and enjoy your days there. I think it is enough time. Take advantage of this opportunity, and go somewhere truly great...in the end, it will just be a few hours more that some other places, and much better. Also, Costa Rica if you like "adventure" type activities and relaxing by a beach/pool. Also, Puerto Rico for a warm weather destination.

This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't go anywhere outside this time zone, and I wouldn't go anywhere that required a lot of time on a plane or making connections. Four days goes fast, and it would be a shame to waste it on travel time. I have friends and family in Northern California so we travel there all the time, and it's one of my favorite places. I would not go there for a four day trip unless I had to.
I would also consider:
Grand Cayman, stay at the Ritz.
Key West. Flying into Key West requires one stop but it might otherwise be worth it for us. Stay at Southernmost, the Westin, or a nice B and B.
Second the suggestion of Little Palm Island in the Keys.

Lots of great options, the key is finding one that suits you and your travel window.
Sorry -- the time of year question is a good one. We'd likely go in May.
As for what to do, we're pretty open. We've done both cities and beach, foreign and domestic. We haven't done too much nature-y stuff, but if it was a cool trip, I'd consider almost anything (although I'd like to to be the sort of trip that we wouldn't take the kids on, at least for several years). That's sort of what we're struggling with. So I'm interested in the full gamut of ideas -- destination, resorts/hotels, activities, etc.
I was going to say skiing in Aspen but May is too late. If you reconsider and want to go in March, do that!
May, NYC would be fun and so easy.
