I don't wish Israel would go away but I do wish the US would not turn a blind eye to some of the more outrageous things that Israel does ranging from its brutal treatment of Palestinians to the continuous expropriation of land for settlements. A more even-handed approach by the US including a willingness to take punitive action against Israel when it flagrantly breaks the law would go a long way in the US being viewed as an "honest broker" by the Palestinians and other Arabs.
What do we as a nation gain in the blind support that we give Israel on just about everything?
How about blind support for Palestine? Yesterday paper said we provide 400 million a year in aid? Does it occur to people we support both countries and are trying to move a peace process forward. Kidnapping killing teens, building expensive tunnels full of syringes and army uniforms probably did not help the pal cause.

Yup. Ataturk would be rolling in his grave. This is the only country where military coups / intervention actually seemed to keep things moving in a positive direction. Now they are f*.

If these criteria were applied worldwide, there would be a lot fewer countries in the world. For all its faults -- and there are many -- Israel is not even the most brutal and amoral country in the region, let alone the world.
+1 Israel deserves criticism, but demonizing them in this way is uncalled for.

If these criteria were applied worldwide, there would be a lot fewer countries in the world. For all its faults -- and there are many -- Israel is not even the most brutal and amoral country in the region, let alone the world.

Well that's the reality in America, pp. Have you traveled to flyover country much and spoken with the residents? Or Florida? Florida and Texas are the worst in terms of people who exclusively rely on Fox News tidbits.
Sad but true: very few people (comparatively speaking) bother to read actual newspapers (domestic and foreign) to keep up with foreign affairs. They don't care.

The reality is that the majority of Americans didn't give a shit about what went on in the Middle East 9-11...then folks thought about it for a while. But everyone goes back to living their own lives and really doesn't think about foreign affairs unless they have a relative in the military or relatives living in the affected countries. Aipac is a right wing lobby group for Israel. American jews and Christians are taught to support Israel from an early age and many of the more militant American supporters of Israel support Aipac. You can donate money to your cause or you can donate money to an organization to lobby the congress for your cause. The better return is the lobby...you can get billions. Many American jews see is Israel as a reflection of US, but it's not.
Not all are taught to support Israel from a young age. Very strange post.
