They are not. The Eastern Orthodox Church is much closer to Christianity's origins.

A chief responsibility of religion is to divide - us (the right ones) from them (the wrong ones).
As someone who was raised Muslim, I always believed (and still do) that Protestants, Catholics, Mormans, Jehovah Witness, are all Christians. They have their differences of course, but they are in a similar branch (though clearly those groups within dispute it).
It's not just Christians that do this - Muslims certainly do that - plenty of Sunnis don't consider Ismailis to be Muslims either.
Human beings just love to create divisions.
But yeah, as someone from a Muslim background, they're all versions of Christians to me.

Yes, Presbyterians believe certain things, which are slightly different than what Methodists or Baptists believe, or Lutherans or Episcopalians, etc. We're all Christian, as are Catholics, and Mormons who call themselves Christian.
Your Presby church is either weird or you're not understanding their teachings.

Catholics believe in salvation through faith but faith must evidenced by good works. Faith without works is dead.
Catholics do believe in purgatory, as a sign of God's grace.

Catholics are continuing the traditions started by Jesus. The Protestants broke off a few hundred years ago and started their own thing. But, I agree that you should be teaching your child not to discuss politics or religion with those outside the family.
