I think it's not about HOW to drink it, so much as the quality of coffee that you're drinking. Folgers coffee is cheap and disgusting, so it needs to be loaded up with crap to make it drinkable. That is very unclassy.
Drinking a high-end coffee tastes soooo good on its own, you don't need to add cream or sugar. That's a much more sophisticated way of doing things - high quality, but prepared simply.
So, drinking coffee black is kind of an indication that you're used to drinking "good" coffee, which makes you look classy.
It's actually not unlike the steak thing. If you're starting with a cheap, junky steak, you might as well cook the hell out of it and dunk it in A-1. If you're eating a high-quality aged ribeye, that would ruin it - it is best appreciated when rare and simply prepared. So eating a rare, un-sauced steak gives the impression that you're used to high-end stuff. It's all about looking like you have expensive taste. Same thing with clothes - high-quality fabrics without much adornment are much "classier" than cheap fabrics with a lot of sequins and glitter.
(Yes, there is a lot of sarcasm in this post, so don't get all bent out of shape about it. Of course you should eat/drink what you like. But there's also an element of truth to it.)
