I am a Columbia law school alum, and think that the school's decsion to delay exams is nutty.

I wonder what the old school civil rights professors like Ogletree think. Surely they took finals during much more racism related trauma.

Yeah. I was at HLS during 9/11 and they didn't cancel classes more than for that one day. This is weird.

Fox News wrote the article and we all know their views on Ferguson. They also claimed that the Black Panthers were intimidating voters in Philadelphia to vote for Obama.

Part of the problem is the pedagogy of law schools. One test. That's it. There's no built in assessment tool for learning. And these exams are a basic sorting mechanism. Do well, up track. Do poorly. Screwed. It's a zero sum game and people want to justify their own success by encouraging a learning system that is unacceptable.

There's another issue at play. Law schools and the legal profession for some reason is a draw for asinine, petty people. More than medicine (my DW's profession) or engineering (where my twin works) or consulting (where other family members work).

Listen, I had some issues and needed time to process (a parent death) during law schools exams. I took the time and still got shit from people about taking exams late. Law students (and lawyers) draw from the worst kind of people. I had people question my placement on law review, complaints filed with the dean, and just terrible stuff. This was at an elite school.

I write this to just say, law school is a pressure cooker, with a poor assessment tool, and students and professions and alums who are just the worst.

And it's not fair. The police violence and racism that is inherent in these discussions is demoralizing. It's just not fair. I want to tell these students that. Life isn't fair. It is so, so unjust. Fairness and a sense that life is fair is a reflection of luck and privilege and just a lack of getting any knocks. Some people are lucky assholes. Some people are amazing people who get shit on. None of that matters insomuch as being a hard worker, being kind, and being willingness to hustle and fight for the things in life you truly want. In spite of the deck being stacked against you.
