OP here. PP, It seems like you don't mind front garages, right? And I am guessing you like large suburban new homes? I personally think that front garages (and quite a few large suburban new homes) are ugly (so I guess I am a "hater"), and that's why I said I was surprised that I like that plan in my OP. I hope to stay very close in (i.e. small lot, small house).

I am genuinely curious: as a front garage lover, what do you think about the front elevation of the house I posted? "Only 1 car garage is bad"? "Not enough garage"? "House too small"?


If you are going to build a new home must haves are 2 car garage and much more space. It wouldn't make sense to make such a small home and go through all the effort to build new. Might as well just buy an reno an old home.

Shame that it looks so ugly with that overly prominent garage and hidden front door.

Haha. Op here. I currently live in a small rowhouse (18 feet wide), so 10x10 will be an improvement for my daughters. I should have said that I'd like to live as close to NWDC as possible, so I am perfectly fine with a small house in a small lot. But a detached garage will be an extra cost (and might not even be feasible depending on lot size / setbacks / access to the back), so between no garage or this discreet front garage, the latter seems like a good idea.

I don't think there's a problem with front loading garages as long as the garage door is not the most prominent feature of the house. If it's narrower than the rest of the house/front quarters and receded back vis-a-vis front door and windows, no problem.

OP, I like it, too!

I would definitely go with this over a detached garage. (I didn't care a bit about garages--until I had an attached garage. I love it.)

It's better than the houses that try to "hide" the garage doors on the side of the house. There is rarely enough room to maneuver a car into the bays, so they become useless for vehicles.
