I work between 20 and 32 hours a week. I'm thinking of going back full time for a promotion however.

15-20 hours/week. I leaned way out when my first was born 3 years ago. I had 15 years under my belt and was burnt out. My DH was just ramping up his career and it worked out perfectly. I assume I'll go back to at least 80% when the kids are in school, but life is so nice right now!

This does sound unrealistic. Assuming you take four weeks of vacation, That's about 10 billable hours a day 6 days a week. No way you are doing this, plus your non billable hours, plus commuting, plus spending a few hours a day with your kids as you say. I certainly have stretches like that as an attorney but could never sustain it all year. Like many others posting here I decided to stay on the mommy track working generally 20-30 hours a week from home. Sure I am underutilized, but I like my work, and I have had plenty of time for the kids. DH also travels, so this was the best arrangement for us. Curious to hear where the other lawyers who WAH are employed. I am in a big firm.

Are you a contract attorney or in a salaried position? 20-30 hours a week from home sounds great!

Anonymous wrote:Well, I'm an attorney too. I chose to mommy-track my career and never work more than 40 hours (often less), and work 2-3 days/week from home. I get zero job satisfaction, have grossly limited my earning capacity and always feel like I didn't live up to my potential and am somewhat of a professional failure. But I do spend lots of time with my kids. With any decision we make, there are always trade-offs and the grass is often greener on the other side.

Have you given up on ever doing anything else?

Proposal Manager here. I work at a minimum 50 hours a week but this increases to 75+ during the busy season (May-September). It sucks. I need a new job.

I am a paralegal and my attorney (senior partner) frequently will spend half an hour on something but bill 2 hours for it because it is a "set fee." In reality he probably spends even less time than that on it because someone else receives and dockets the incoming material, gives it to him, who hands it to me with instructions, then I prepare and give it to him for review. So yes, no one bills that much time without committing fraud, but it is extremely commonplace in the legal industry. Hence why it is still imploding.
