My dog is allergic to wheat, soy, corn, chicken, lamb, and beef!!! It's horrible!

Her treats are dried duck liver and Canine Caviar grain free Wild Ocean dog food.

We also used Blue Buffalo for our dog (large lab mix) and he didn't react well (GI problems). We tried a few other premium brands for a while until we found Fromm's. We love that line (made in Wisconsin, never had a recall). We buy Adult Gold but they have grain-free varieties as well. Most of the independent pet stores around here sell it, and you can get it on Amazon, too.

It's totally not a hassle for us. I buy it about 3x a year and I order it online, so it's delivered. If going out of town with the dog, I bring a snap tight container with enough food plus extra just in case. I have never had to board her, so no worries about transitioning food for that.

I want to feed my dog the good food, I don't see anything wrong with that. She can't speak up and tell me if there is a problem with her food, so I have to try to give her what I think is best for her. When I decided to get a dog I knew it was a big responsibility and it won't always be convenient, but it is worth it because of what my dog provides for me. Who knew dog food could become controversial lol.


I agree. I buy it from the pet store down the street. Easy peasy.

I don't feed my kids McDonald's food, or eat it myself, because I feel awful when I do and it is bad for you. I make the same choices for my dog.

I imagine, as well, that in the long run I save money in vet bills. A dog who eats well is a dog who is largely healthy.

Tell yourself that if it helps you sleep at night, but my 2 dogs both are Beneful or Iams every day for 10+ years (after we finally gave up on driving to the pet store every time we needed to buy more food, since we have a small house and no room to store months of food for 2 80-lb dogs). Both were strong, energetic, had beautiful coats, and had literally zero health problems. They were never at the vet except for their yearly visit until they were over 13, and even then it wasn't much. Vet even said they had unusually clean teeth. Both outlived the normal life span range for dogs of their size. (They were mixed-breed, which may also play a part in their excellent health profiles. They did both get sick and die eventually but even the most expensive dog food can't change that. I will never be suckered into buying pricey dog food again!

My dog somehow gained a few pounds so now he's eating Nature Balance Fat Dog. I love Orijen Salman though. Super expensive. I have a Harrier Hound.

My German Shepherd has kind of a sensitive stomach with kibble. I give him Science Diet. Tried Blue Buffalo for a bit and he loved it but it got too expensive when he reached 100 pounds. Tried to switch to some other things but always went back to Science Diet since that's what his stomach can tolerate. That being said, he usually gets a lot of scraps and leftovers from our dinners and probably only gets a full bowl of kibble 2-3 nights/week. For example, if I buy and cook a pork shoulder for pulled pork, I save ALL the fat scraps for him (and the bone if it was bone-in) and that usually is good for 2-3 dinners. Same with a chuck roast or other meats, and I always save and cook up the scraps from cutting up chicken breasts, etc. He's pretty spoiled. For treats, we mostly buy Jack Link's beef jerky and/or whatever my mom gives us when we visit (she LOVES buying him stuff).

Two large Nothern breed dogs.
One gets Castor and Pollux kibble.
I cook for the other dog.
As for treats, I give home-made jerky, home-made Frosty Paws and they love Trader Joe's dog biscuits.

The only thing one of my two beagles can tolerate is grain-free, chicken-based food. So since there are two of them (and they don't respect personal space) both have to eat it. However, PetSmart's house brand, Authority, is well-priced and often there are coupons. So it's not a financial burden. The larger issue is that they cannot eat anything that isn't pure meat, so the only treats we give them are frozen chunks of chicken breast. It satisfies their need to gnaw and and cost-wise, it's not bad. We buy it in bulk, cook it off, and then break it into chunks and freeze it. My vet suggested it and it's worked for us.

There are still many people who let their dogs roam free, feed them inexpensive food, and aren't consistent with their shots/vaccinations. My vet has said that better food and medical care are making all the difference for those of us who want our dogs to live indoors with their family and have a quality life and as long a life as possible. I think that's why you see more people making the effort to give the best they can.

Orijen 6 fish. I'm willing to bet your pup is allergic to chicken. Also blue buffalo made all my dogs sick.

People food? Whatever I'm eating. Raw whole milk in the dog food every day. Egg yolks.
