OP here. That's what I did at my old job when I had an office but now since I have to hotel, I can't leave anything at work. And there's a waiting list for lockers. (yes, first world problems, I know...)

Maybe, but it does sound like an awful environment.

I make it a point to try new shoes inside on carpet for a few hours to test how comfortable they are. Are your shoes tight and uncomfortable, or are they hurting your arches or the balls of your feet? If they're just tight, try wearing them with thin socks around the house for a bit to stretch them out. But you can't return them at this point since they've been worn outside.

Really! Who would wear heals to walk to Metro?

I don't own any comfortable heels and have a 5+ minute walk uphill from the metro (and downhill going home, which is also very painful in uncomfortable shoes) to work, so I jumped at these. I am wearing them today and HOLY CRAP they are SOOOOOOOO uncomfortable. Like, I was practically crying by the time I got to work. I am contemplating going home barefoot, they're so uncomfortable. I cannot keep these shoes but I am worried that DSW won't take them back b/c they'll obviously be worn. Any advice?
BTW, what is up with naturalizer being uncomfortable? Isn't this the company that had those commercials in the 80s that had two women's basketball teams playing in their heels?

I think DSW gets a lot of stuff made specifically for them. I have tried to price compare when I see shoes there, and they often never show up anywhere else besides DSW. So their Naturalizer brand might somehow be lower quality than the Naturalizer you buy at another store.

I believe this to be true about many of the brands at DSW. I would rather spend more for better quality and comfort.

Yes I suspect the same thing, that it’s like outlet line merchandise

It’s not tacky if the store accepts them. The cost of accepting worn shoes as returns is built into their business.

I worked at a store that sold shoes in high school and we accepted worn shoes if they were clean (we didn’t take the pair of white sneakers that looked like they were dipped into a vat of red wine) and looked like they’d only been worn once or not at all. We had a lot of repeat customers that bought way more shoes than they returned. Once a year we had a gently used shoe sale with the shoes that normally retailed for around $100 being sold for $15-$20. There was a line when we opened and they were all snapped up in minutes.

Please do not take worn shoes back to a store. Wear tennis shoes to and from the metro.

After 5 years, I don’t think OP has a leg to stand on. Donate the shoes.

I called customer service at DSW store and was told that their shoes are shipped from overseas and they probably got wet during shipping and caused the odor I am allergic to mold. All of the shoes and boxes in the store had this mildew odor. Very upset that DSW would sell shoes with this problem. How do I handle this? Eunice Will

I assume you ordered them online? Because if you went to the store and bought them even though they smelled that's on you. And no one cares about your mold allergy.

Ugh, no, do not do this. Only ill-bred troglodytes with no home training do this.

OP here. I have to use a work laptop so my bag is already so ridiculously stuffed, between my laptop, power cord, lunch, etc. I've been in the habit of wearing comfortable shoes and changing at work but I was hoping to find a way to lighten my load and get shoes that were comfortable enough to wear to work. The discomfort is at my toes. They're very pinched, and the footbed is so much stiffer than I realized as well. It sounds like it'll be a losing battle to return them so I will wear them with thick socks and see if that works but not feeling too optimistic. Thanks everyone for your input! I think wearing them on carpet though may be misleading. I think they were so comfortable at the store exactly because I was trying them on carpet. Walking in them on hard sidewalk was a very different experience. I was in such a rush this morning getting my kids up and out the door that the thought of putting on different shoes was the furthest thing from my mind, even though I could already feel like they may not work out. Feeling very silly now.

OP again: should've noted: I have to bring my laptop home every night since we use a hoteling office system.

Leave your heels at work. This is not rocket science.

Sorry, I read later comments and see you can’t leave them. I am unfamiliar with “to hotel”. Clearly, I’m not a rocket scientist myself.

I never return shoes, never. I donate them as the shoes you get in charity shops are usually in terrible condition. Businesses can't survive with people doing this sort of thing. Chalk it up to experience and buy a bigger bag to hold a pair of work shoes in.
