It isn't trendy, but it's consistent, classicly elegant, and quiet/warm enough to feel romantic (as distinct from some high-end restaurants, which feel like they cater to business people entertaining on expense accounts). You can go for a tasting menu or order regular portions a la carte. I recall our waiter explaining that one part of the menu (savories, maybe?) includes many of the restaurant's most decadent options, so focus on that if you want to indulge.
Plume is also very nice in a classical way, and the space is beautiful, but I prefer the cooking at Marcel's.
My DH loves Restaurant Eve in Alexandria, especially the sweetbreads. I've been underwhelmed by Komi, though I haven't been in a while. It IS food theater, but the cooking itself, while inventive, was less satisfying to me than the cooking at a lot of other places.
Agree w Marcel's. DH and I just went there for the exact same type of occasion (promotion/anniversary celebration). Very romantic, service & food & wine were impeccable.
Obviously not a foodie/trendy place if that's what you're looking for.
