A better concept is "encourage" or "incentivize," with options that are actually attractive. Keep in mind if you switched all the kids from a JKLM to a closed, previously failing school in ward 8, that school would suddenly be as successful as the kids' previous school -- with a few points taken off for the long commute everyday and a lack of neighborhood camaraderie.

This is what your neighborhood school would be like if a critical mass of neighbors sent their kids to it. Plain and simple. THere's no other way to do it. It takes DCPS and parents to make it happen.

I agree with you. I'm about to be zoned out of Deal for our kid (we're in the weird section EOTP that is West Elem, but has access to Deal) but I also think that I could likely do more good if I am forced to make West - MacFarland - Roosevelt work. My kid will get a good education any place because I have the ability to supplement, but that isn't the case for all kids. And honestly, our neighborhood is changing so quickly (for the better) that maybe by the time our little kids get to middle school age, these schools could be comparable to Deal & Wilson. But I think the reason that the schools on the other side of the park are so successful is that the parents are there to force the issue. I'm willing to do the groundwork - I knew this might be a factor if I wanted to stay in the city and not flee to the burbs - but I also know I can't do it alone, and would need other parents to work with me on this. Would I rather the lines stay how they are so my kid can attend Deal? Of course. But if that's not going to be the reality, then I'm going to have to make it the reality on this side of the park, or move.

Who's to say that Hearst is an inferior school than Murch? The only measurement you're using is scores. Hearst has a lot more variables than Murch so I don't think ANYone can argue that they're being sent to an inferior school. Get over yourselves. Show me that a kid went from Advanced at Murch then forced to go to Hearst and he became Proficient then we can talk.

Yes, but all of these families knew that was the case when they bought their houses. I live one block away from the rezoning and never in a million years did I think my house would be zoned out of Murch. Yes, Murch is crowded, but I'm 4 blocks away! I, unlike many other people on my block, actually feel better about Hearst as a school than Murch because I like small schools and Murch is too big. But the commute to Hearst is just not workable with our two WOHP, one car household.

PP "fat troll" here. Thanks PPs for coming to my defense. Correct, my family walks 8 blocks to school, playground, library and many more amenities that us DC folk claim as a benefit. As another PP mentioned if the subject is in fact Murch/Hearst the difference is probably more like 1-2 blocks. OP likely didn't state the schools/neighborhood impacted because she exaggerated her situation.

OP, let me tell you something. There are several families at Hearst now that live closer to Janney (an even BETTER school than Murch) than to Hearst. Did they panic, get furious, try to take down the entire system? No, they didn't. They walk their kids to school everyday. They are active parents in the PTA and other committees and work to make the school even better. They socialize with other Hearst families but also with their neighbors that go to Janney.

But neither school is 2 blocks from the OP's house. Another poster, was reportedly in a situation under a previous proposal that is no longer being considered that would transfer her away from Murch, even though Murch was reportedly 2 blocks from her house. In the current proposal, the closest kids to Murch who would be moved would live at Albemarle St. and 36th St, which is 5 blocks or .3 miles from Murch, and less than 3/4 of a mile from Hearst.

As far as understanding why, it's pretty easy. If the situation is Murch/Hearst, then the school that's somewhat closer to the OP's house is seriously overcrowded. The other school has space for more IB kids. Moving the boundaries will alleviate some of the crowding at Murch, and provide IB spots for students at Hearst. If the schools are not Murch/Hearst, the reasoning is almost certainly the same.
