Have you been paying taxes for her? Have you paid her by check to document that you have in fact been paying her? When I was an intern in law school, I assisted with litigation where live in help accused the former employer of not paying her and it was clear to me that you should always document payment and hours. Sued the pants off the employer and won. You could be opening a big can of worms if you piss off this woman.

The difference is you probably had an agreement of some sort that stipulated that. OP doesn't.

Yeah, also note that OP says housekeeper paid rent by working hours. That's different than a job that also provides you with housing as a perk.

I would give 30 days notice and start networking with your friends/neighbors to help her find a new position. There are a lot of people looking right now.
