OP here. I did not mean that people go under the knife to look good. I just mean to say that even plain people can look well put together by getting a great haircut and wearing clothes that flatter them. I do not mean just having access to designer clothes, shoes and handbags - that many rich people are wearing, but still managing to look not well put together.

I also do not agree with a PP assertion that being good looking is a detriment in this city. I think people can look good and still be a power player.

Name a woman who looks really good and is a power player.

For me, I am not going to "fix" anything with surgery. I'm an accomplished, 49 year old woman. What would I need to fix? I'd say I'm not beautiful but not exactly plain either. I work on controlling my weight and applying sunscreen and Retin-An, but that's about as far as I 'm going to go with fixing my physical flaws.

We have the house, send the kids to private and save money... I'd rather spend money on those things than look fashionable, so that's my reason for being "rich but plain looking". I don't think anyone would look at me and say I'm frumpy.... just simple.

I agree. By that logic, I know a few small towns in West VA, Western PA, and Western MD where a HHI of $40K would land you in the 1% and $60K would make you very rich indeed.

I'm 22:31 - if you're plain looking, you're plain looking. Now if you're asking why people are rich and frumpy, the answer might be different. Maybe they are smart people whose brains are busy doing important stuff and not focusing on appearance or clothes. Maybe they genuinely have no idea how to make themselves look better, or maybe they just don't care.

I'm in Finance, and not client-facing, so I might be one of those people you criticize. I'm neat and presentable and I know how to dress myself, but unless I have a big meeting (especially presenting), I just don't try that hard. I was hired for my brains, my background and my MBA, not for my body, my hair or my face. Around here, the stylish people you see tend to be in sales, marketing, PR or the artsy fields.
