McDonogh, Garrison Forest, St Paul's, and Park all have bus systems ( some are quite extensive) and all so pick ups as far away as Columbia Mall and Annapolis. Similarly, kangaroo coach, a private bus service that takes kids to Gilman, RPCS, bryn mawr, BL, and Friends, has buses with pick ups in coLymbia. My kids at Gilman and RPCS have plenty of classmates from lutherville, timonium, cockeysville, Stevenson.

We live in the city, and my kid is about to start at Gilman. I'm curious as to whether most of his classmates will be from the county or city… I'll report back.
I feel really lucky that such a great school is 10 minutes away from our house!

Sigh. The city isn't...how shall we say it... "manicured," or built up with gleaming new chain restaurants. But it has a lot of character, a lot of nice places to spend time, and it's very down-to-earth/honest and diverse. (My neighborhood has a range of incomes, and several distinct communities, and I am on a first name basis with most of my neighbors, something I've experienced in few places.) To me, this city is very comfortable and a lot of fun, even with the problems. Its problems are not insignificant, but neither are they insufferable. I plan to stay here for life, assuming our jobs hold, and yes, I have small children. It doesn't hurt that my mortgage is only 150,000.
Anyway, I get it: Baltimore is a very particular kind of place, and you either really like it old brick buildings and working class cities that have converted store fronts to weird little cafes, or you don't. In your case, I presume, this isn't your cuppa. But to claim this makes the city "a dangerous dump" (or a "sh***ole" as an earlier poster said), just makes you sound like you left the burbs and couldn't "deal." Its like listening to people who don't like spicy food brag about how they are incapable of eating anything but hamburgers. We can go eat hamburgers if you want, but do you really have to go on about your narrow palate?

I live in Columbia heights - no one can accuse me of being some fragile suburbanite flower. And I stand by my earlier statement that Baltimore is a shithole.

Oh. Howard County folks don't tend to use the Baltimore private schools, unless there's a strong family history. It's typically city people and residents of northern Baltimore County. There are some HoCo and others, of course, but they're a small minority.

Yes kids drive from the city to McDonough. Suburban kids go too, of course. Why is it surprising that people who live in the city might send their children to private schools in the burbs? Or that people in the city where public high schools aren't considered that good, might be more willing to pay tuition for private schools than people who live in the burbs where public schools are generally considered reasonably good?
Just wondering. DC kids rarely drive out if the city to go to private school.... Though this is becoming the new normal.

No one from Howard county sends their kids to Baltimore schools -- it is a 40 plus minute drive each way during rush hour. There are a few good privates out in Howard county. The Baltimore privates each have unique strengths and weaknesses, and I would say 50/50 division between kids that live in Baltimore County and those that live in city. Fairly uncommon for city kids to attend Mcdonough or Garrison Forest, but it happens a bit. McDongough has its own bus service. Public schools in Baltimore County are good, but middle and high schools are large (not unlike MoCo) and some send their kids to private for that reason.

Grew up in Potomac , went to Mater Dei and Churchill the UMD. The Baltimore private kids always seemed interested me. They all kind of know each other and it's a huge lax-bro culture. More old fashioned with generational wealth and class division.
Baltimore is a real place.. Hardscrabble , charm ,grit , character and tough to admit but more authentic style than DC.
