Our counters are actually very dark brown (almost black) and we have white cabinets, but we used Benjamin Moore: Smoke Embers #1466 and like it. This also extends into the family room. PP here again - I do kind of agree about the polished granite, though. Ours is not polished and IMO it looks beautiful - the roughness really adds a lot of texture/interest.

Who is hating on new builds? They are just being used as a reference for design trends. I actually live in a home in Ashburn built in the early 2000s and the poster is correct. White cabinets and black polished granite were trends at the time. As a matter of fact the exact granite they were pushing was "absolute black".

Ps, highly polishes granite is beginning to be outdated, and starting to like like corian counters did in the early 2000s.

My kitchen has white cabinets and black granite and I'm telling you it looks great. Marble tile backsplash and blue gray wall paint with great big white trim. It will still look great in 5 years. Good thing you don't live in my house or you would hate it. It is beautiful except the polished granite is a killer! Not ripping out perfectly good counters (kitchen was remodeled by prior owners in 2011).

Take the house from ashburn and put it in McLean, Bethesda and Arlington and it would sell very quickly for twice the price. Don't hate on new builds if you are jealous.

Everything else should be grey. Search DCUM for all the must-have shades.

Then check back on the DCUM in 5 years and learn that your kitchen is out of date and SO 2014!
