If you send chocolate, it's an allergy risk. Non-chocolates probably have food dyes. Sugar will kill you. Tchotchkes fill the landfill. Tattoos are trampy. If your card is a cartoon character, you're endorsing TV. If it's an animal, you'll get a call from PETA. If it's handmade, you're a sanctimommy, and if it's store bought, you neglect your kids.

You can't win, but not playing is also a jerk move.

Send what you/your kid like. Mine is into glow sticks and loves Skittles, so that's what we're sending.

As a mom of a kid with food allergies, I really appreciate this! Thank you!

Hmm.... I find the candy hard to avoid now that most of the valentines aimed at kids come with candy.

I guess I will have lost the "respect" of previous posters - wth?! I got valentines with nerds to pass out and my 2nd grader is very happy.

Totally my dh too! foreign born as well and he does this on Halloween too. He doesn't get it at all
As for the op question, I do lollipops bc my dc wants that. If she wants stickers or chocolates I'd do that, basically whatever school says its ok & dc wants to give out.

Yes. You have no memory of candy hearts that say LUV or B MINE? Really? Heart shaped red-hots? Necco wafers? Been around FOREVER.

Not pp, but we didn't get those from other kids. There would be a bowl of them at a party. We just gave each other cards, usually ones you punched out.

OP you won't please everyone. Send whatever you send. Some will toss it, some won't. It's a no-win situation.

I'd only do it if my kid really, really wanted to. But for us, I'm hoping the other kids will be happy with just a card this year.
