Dave Ramsey is a conservative prick.

Last week I tuned in on this forum's suggestion and he was on some rant about how we shouldn't have a minimum wage. "They should just get a better job" was pretty much his response. Right, cause that's realistic.

No way I could listen to him. No way.

Some of you guys are missing the whole philosophy of "Dave Ramsey". The whole premise of his program is to be 100% totally and completely debt free. Not "where is your money most marketable", or should you pay down your student loans faster vs invest in the market. It is to be DEBT FREE. Including mortgages and student loans. Deciding on your best investment portfolio is NOT what Dave Ramsey is about. It is about being free from owing anyone else any money, living within your means, and THEN making the most out of investment portfolios.

me too. he never teaches people how to make their money work for them. i feel like he markets to middle americans who are generally uneducated in money matters. he just rubs me the wrong way. i know the same can be said for suze orman but for some reason she doesn't annoy me as much.

Over 60% of his followers never begin investing. Eh.

Yeah, of all the possible criticisms of Ramsey, your main issue is that he said debt collectors are jerks?

debt collectors tend to be scum, though. they commonly harass and threaten people.

I listen to Dave when I can, it's not often I'm in my car at 2:00 though. I find some of his advice to be useful, and it's kind of reassuring to hear of other stories of folks that are worse off then me (debt-wise).

Two related pieces of advice though stand out to me. In the past couple of weeks and once today, he's given some advice that I just don't know if I can agree with.

One was whether or not to repay a pay-day lender and the other was the same, but to a debt collector. Dave went on a rant about how they're "morons and scum", but said nothing of the caller who got themselves into that situation. We've all been desperate, so maybe that's why he let them off the hook, but in the case of a debt collector, come on, they're within their rights to collect the debt that YOU OWE.

We can probably agree that debt collectors and people that buy property liens SUCK, and many are truly bad actors. I've been a "victim" of both, but letting the borrower off the hook really doesn't solve things either in my opinion.

Oh and "Better than I deserve" gets so annoying.

I'm a liberal Jewish girl and I swear by Dave Ramsey's methods. His 7 baby steps provide a simple and clear pathway for people who are struggling. Very easy to follow, you see results quickly, it's very motivating. He's a no bullshit guy and I appreciate that. Just ignore the right-wing Evangelica rantings if that's not your thing.

Once you have paid off or paid down your debt, then sites likes bogleheads are good for advice about investing. However, you are not in a position to invest yet. If it were me, I would start with Dave Ramsey.
