Navy is not an obscure color. Turquoise, teal, light blue would be obscure. Navy is a neutral color staple - it's as "obscure" as beige. Navy is not akin to purple velvet, stop over reacting..

Ha ha! This is what I'd do. Because if she's dictating a color to wear at the party, how much fun is this party really going to be? None is the correct answer.

Navy is an obscure color right now. We attended a wedding where everyone was asked to wear all white like an old fashioned "lawn party" from a Merchant Ivory movie. Unfortunately some of the chubbier guest looked like elephants.

+1 - If you do not want to comply with the wishes of the guests of honor, do not attend. If someone threw a housewarming party and asked you to take your shoes off, but you were wearing embarrassing socks, would you refuse the request? If someone dictated a black tie dress code for a birthday party, would you show up in jeans? A little silly (in most circles) to wear formal gear to a birthday celebration, but if you do not want to do it, you just don't go.

While I myself would not have a problem with just buying something navy, I am fortunate enough to be in a financial place where that is no problem for me. But that is not reasonable to assume for every guest. Seems really unfair to force guests who may not have extra in their budgets to buy a new outfit in addition to gifts etc.

It's only a "thing" in high school proms. Adults don't dictate uniforms for parties. And what is "the spirit in which it was intended," precisely? Controlling and self-centered?

If you are going to do this then you pick a color that most people already own. Not an obscure color like navy.

Ha. I was the mother of one of the two flower girls in a recent wedding. My two fanciest dresses are navy blue - it's always been one of my best colors. I picked one of them to wear. When we get to the wedding, the mom of the other flower girl, from across the country, whom we'd never met, was wearing my OTHER navy blue formal dress.

So....there are plenty of wedding-style navy blue dresses out there.

I would roll my eyes and then try to comply. Can you just wear all white if the request is navy and white? Navy pants and a white blouse or something? A white cardigan over a somewhat dark blue top and whatever pants you want? In my family, we'd all balk and then attend the party so we could talk how about how ridiculous the bride was being.
