Love it too. And I love the irony that it's a gif of TRACY MORGAN on a thread about boy/girl names crossing genders.

I am obviously ignorant of literature or world history, but I had no idea this name was historically a boys name. It sounds like a girl's name (like Kristen) and it's not crazy for someone to think of using it as such.

No way, no how should you name GIRL Tristan.

I'm not pretending that history and social consensus don't exist or impart meaning. However t I think most of the posters who say "it's a boy's name" seem to be implying that it's unacceptable to use it for a girl and that we should all just go along with whatever "social consensus" suggests. There's lots of things that are okay according to "social consensus" that are not values I support or want to convey to my children. So while I agree that certain names may traditionally or historically be associated with one sex or the other, I don't understand what's so bad about going against that and using whatever name you like, even if it's traditionally used for the other sex.

In the case of Tristan, there is also a very long literary tradition in which this name is exclusively given to male figures. In this country (some European countries wouldn't allow it), you may choose to ignore these circumstances and use this name for a girl (in which case it will become a girl's name for you and maybe your friends), but that doesn't change the fact that it is traditionally a male name, and that most people still perceive it as such. Don't think you are particularly smart or free-thinking for pretending that history and social consensus don't exist or impart meaning. ALL meaning of anything cultural is history and social consensus.

I wouldn't have thought of it myself, but I kind of like it. I don't care for it for a boy, though. Don't sweat all the naysayers. Just go for it if you like it and no one will complain to your face.

Thought of you last night, OP - I saw a female Tristan on a rerun of Bad Ink, a reality tattooing contest show. No judgment, just sharing. Don't think she was a stripper (someone mentioned that would be a female Tristan's fate).

Ditto. OMG, are you so fucking stupid that you think this is a good idea?

DCUM - The gift that keeps on giving.

Jesus, why is this board so bitchy today? I mean DCUM is rarely polite but is it really necessary to call someone fucking stupid because you don't like their name choice? Are the schools out on Christmas break already?

And, no, I'm not the OP.

"Fucking stupid" poster: please seek therapy. It is unhealthy to feel the need to potentially hurt a stranger who asked for help.

Someone needs some wine and a hot bath.

'Tis the season to be a total bitch.

Some of the comments were funny- and I laughed. Some of you were nasty- like the fucking stupid and what are you thinking commentator.

I take the good and well intentioned commentary, and will not be naming my baby Tristan. Guess we are down to Sofia and Ava!

I love them both!

And "Sofia Tristan" would be sort of cool.

Siegfried is much cooler. You can call her Ziggy for short.
