I live in upper NW. We make $350k/year. The trash men make less than $20/hour.
I tip them at Christmas because it's the decent thing to do.

You people are weird. Tipping someone for doing their non-minimum wage job. And $20? Geez. If you're gonna do it, at least make it $50-100. No one making over $15/hour cares about a $20 tip.

My two boys went through a stage when they were 2 to 4 years old where they ran to the window or door when they heard the trash truck. Our garbage men usually always waved to them and my boys would yell and wave back. I started tipping them back then and I still do 6 years later.

No kidding. We tip the paper guy (yup), the mail man (in spite of the neighbor who claimed to be the can't tip the postman more than $20. police - she can stuff it), and each and every trash guy at least $20.

How can people in this area possibly be so cheap and nasty? Have you any spirit at all? How sad.



PP here--asking about the pie. I was not making a comment about cheapness. It is all about the thought, really. Anyway, just asking because genuinely curious what type of pie.

A pie, handled by sanitation workers with filthy hands and riding around in a garbage truck all day? Please avoid giving food gifts to these guys.
I'm sure not only would they probably wash their hands, they would probably use a fork and plate which would probably be provided.
Agreed. I'm sure the PP would be stunned they've picked up a few genteel habits of hers like, uh, a fork with their food.

Yes. And I give a bag of money to a small boy to run and get me a Christmas goose. Because I like to spread cheer and the alternative is sad and dismal.


You're so grumpy it's funny.
I thought I was grumpy, but now I'm smiling, and thinking about buying McDonald's cards for our trash collectors. Recently they backed up 3 houses and helped me roll my giant trashcan the rest of the way down the drive way when I was late. I also appreciate that when I'm late to work (which is always) the guys always pull the truck to the side of the street and wave me by. (FFX)

Probably because it sets an unofficial expectation to tip. So maybe in the future, the non-tippers don't get as good service because they don't tip. And the trend seems to be growing to include other types of services while other services are not included.

Of course, this is suburbia, so the City Slickers may have a more difficult task ahead.

Today the leaf guys removed a huge pile of leaves mixed in with snow at our front curb. They spent a good half hour geting them up. I took out water and oranges to them and they were amazed. One guy told me no one had ever given them anything.

Maybe I am a sucker but these guys work VERY hard under bad conditions.
Exactly why I give small gifts, and could give less than a good shit who doesn't like it. You got a problem with that?
