This is definitely not accurate. Ellicott City is more of a Baltimore suburb.

I know people that do this happily. Several. They live on the hill. I think H Street or NoMA would also work well.

Live in DC and save a shit ton of money sending your kid/s to public preschool. There are some GREAT charters and although they are on a lottery system you will easily be able to get your kid into one of them.

I lived in DC and commuted to Hopkins medical campus for school via Marc. Shuttle from Penn Station to JHH took about 15 minutes. But there was a wait for the shuttle usually, so the total time is longer. I had a long metro ride to get to Union Station, so my commute was often 1.5-2 hours door to door. But I did all my homework on the train, so it wasn't so bad.

After I graduated I got a job in Baltimore and started driving. From CCDC it took a little less than an hour to get up near Penn Station.

I wouldn't commute via Marc if I had a small kid. There is no flexibility if you need to pick up unexpectedly early. Plus, if there is an issue on the track, the trains can be delayed by an hour or more.

When I got pregnant, I quit and got a job with a 10 minute commute. It was such a relief.

I commuted to school in Baltimore for two years living in Petworth DC. It's the green line which runs to MARC. I found it pretty easy. GL

What is your house budget? These are good suggestions, but they are all over the map, price-wise. Knowing how much you can spend on a house would narrow the reccomendations.

No 495 here. DH works in dc and ballston. Either metro or thru city commute. Rt 29 corridor is the way to go, as close to downtown silver spring as budget allows.

We are pretty similar (DW job in East Baltimore JHU, my job in NOVA) and the optimal place from what we saw was Capitol Hill near Union Station. We ended up in Upper NW for the ES/MS schools, but seriously considered Capitol Hill.

You can take MARC to Baltimore/Penn and the shuttle to East Baltimore from there (~3h daily commute door-to-door), your husband can metro it or drive to NOVA (~35 min to McLean).

We used to do this. We lived in NE Washington. I commuted to Baltimore and my husband to VA. It was super easy right off of 295.
