By what standards, reputation?

I think we all need to come back down to reality and review the test scores and academic offerings. The consensus is that Madison has a good sports program but Marshall offers many more academic programs.

In general Madison has been a "good" school for some time and Marshall just recently became "good" so there is a reputation hurdle.

In all honesty there isn't that much of a difference between Marshall, Madison, Oakton etc... and McLean (to some point).

If you want to go to a school that is the best in the area by a long shot, you would pick Langley and the test scores prove it's superiority. Langley get mostly 98s where as the other schools listed above get 90-95 with each school out scoring each other in one or two categories. What is interested is that Marshall seems to outscore in math but madison scores higher in english. One interesting fact is oakton scores poorly in math at 89 and followed by McLean at 91.

Of course the best school in the area is TJ which scores 100s across the board but that is obviously a school you must test into.

Governor's STEM Academy to Be Established at Marshall Academy

The Virginia Board of Education has approved a proposal from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) to establish a Governor’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Academy at Marshall High School. The STEM academy will offer new, rigorous academic and career and technical education (CTE) programs in information technology, as well as STEM engineering and aerospace classes. Full implementation of these courses will take place during the 2014-15 school year.

Governor's STEM Academies are designed to expand options for students to acquire literacy in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while earning industry credentials required for high-demand, high-wage, and high-skill careers. Each academy represents a partnership among school divisions, postsecondary institutions, and business and industry.

Marshall Academy will continue its mission of preparing FCPS students in career and technical education, and will enhance its program offerings to expanded options in information technology and STEM engineering pathways. Staff members will maintain the tradition of partnering with industry, government, postsecondary, and higher education, and the academy will continue to serve as an incubator of new secondary STEM and CTE programs and curriculum within FCPS. Plans include collaboration with postsecondary partners, chambers of commerce, local business leaders, and federal partners to advance STEM and CTE programs.

Through this collaboration, student experiences in design, innovation, acquisition of technical skills, and access to contemporary technologies will be enhanced and enriched as new program initiatives are introduced. Among the new offerings to be introduced are cybersecurity, Cisco healthcare, STEM advanced engineering and robotics, and geospatial systems.

So if you look at the Madison handbook, if you want to take computer, engineering or other courses to get a specialized diploma they refer you to other schools such as Marshall.

If you go to Madison there are options to utilize the other area school's academies which offer the advance classes and programs.

JV and Varsity both crushed Marshall.

Marshall doesn't have over 500 freshmen.

Many children in Wolftrap, Westbriar, Freedom Hill, Vienna Elementary, Stenwood, and Cunningham Park boundaries go onto Marshall. All the rest of Vienna goes to Madison. I don't think there are any Vienna kids who go to Oakton although the Madison boundary currently extends into what I consider to be Oakton. Since we live in one of these split feeder school Marshall/Madison boundaries, I definitely get the feeling that Marshall is a Vienna school. I see parents from Vienna attending Marshall high school games all the time. Oakton High is very near Madison, however only the Oakton Elementary and Mosby Woods kids live near Vienna. So it makes a great rival team since it's close by but yet the students are not very familiar with each other. Maybe the kids who went to Oakton Elementary but then attended Madison have some friends who attend Oakton, but I'd guess most of the kids in Vienna have more friends at Marshall than Madison. I've lived in Oakton area too and felt that South Lakes and Chantilly were as much of a neighboring rival team as Madison was.
