On the fairly infrequent occasions when I go out for drinks and/or dinner, I always peruse the cocktail list with a frown.
I want something different than wine, but I don't want plain liquor, or anything with soda (tonic is OK), and nothing too sweet.
I like Tanqueray and tonic with extra lime (but we make those at home) or a good margarita (but these are often disappointing, unless it's an expensive place...finally learned to make sure they use fresh lime and not a mix).
What else should I try?

if it isn't wine, then i like normandy cider (fizzy) or english perry. anything else is just too much of an investment.

Scotch (Macallan 12, Lagavulin, Laphroaig)
Bourbon (Elijah Craig)
Calvados
In the summer,
G&T
Scotch (Chivas or Dewars)
Beer
Basically, I'm too lazy to pour more than one thing into my glass. Except in the summer when I might get motivated to add ice cubes and tonic to my gin.

A really good Old Fashioned. There used to be a bar in SF that would make the best ones but now I settle for mediocre.

That was my drink of choice in college in the South! Many a good afternoon was spent sipping those at crawfish boils, bonfire parties, pig roasts, etc.
Me as well. Takes me back to tail gates, and autumn parties outside with brisk air and a buzz. I miss those days.
