In the meantime, anyone have a brand of canned pumpkin they love?

Weird. I've been using Libby's for years and never had a problem.

same here. My mom has been making it for as long as I can remember to.

Just tried a chocolate cake recipe which substituted Libby's canned pumpkin (not the pumpkin pie mix) for the oil or butter and while the flavor, texture and moistness we wonderful, the grit was not! Good heavens, what a waste. Will definitely try Trader Joe's or Whole Food brands! By the way, I also purchased some Libby's mandarin oranges, and found that they were a product of CHINA! If I ever need canned mandarin oranges again, I definitely will get Trader Joe's which are not from China.

I have made and bought a lot of pumpkin products in my time, and I have to say almost every pumpkin product that I have consumed has had some kind of grit/sand in it, whether it be a little or a lot. Those of us that have noticed this know that it could be nothing other than sand/rock. I have yet to try organic, so maybe I'll give that a shot the next time around.

Never had that problem. Think it must be something in your prep.

+1 And I've made a lot of pumpkin pies. Libby's is my first choice after finding other brands to be watery.

This is a REALLY OLD THREAD but I wanted to add I have never had a problem with Libby's pumpkin. In fact, it tastes better and has a better texture than the organic canned pumpkin that I bought one time. I just made two Libby's pies last month (using almond milk to keep it dairy free) and they were delicious. Even my skeptical kids ate it.

I'm sure the original poster from 2013 will be happy to hear that.

I thought it very strange to get grit in my pumpkin--thought it was a fluke. Then, I bought another can a few months later at a different store. This can was MUCH worse for the amount of grit! It's unbelievable! I kept taking bites and tried to identify what the grit was--I was afraid I'd break a tooth. If you've ever gotten sand in your food when picnicing at the beach, then you know! It's SAND! I certainly won't buy Libby's again. I just hope it's not in other brands. BTW, I did not cook the pumpkin. I'm on Atkins and just added cream cheese and cinnamon, Splenda. No sand in in my cinnamon or Splenda :-[

My dad and I roasted a sugar pumpkin. Super easy. So much pumpkin! The flavor of the pie is so delicate and floral

Did you remember to take the eggs out of the shells?

Why not just buy real squash and make your on filling? It's actually pretty easy to do.

He's one simple recipe
