Me too. I get the impression that most people responding here are not daily dress wearers. I am. But I cannot wear sheath style dresses and most years that is all you can find in stores. So in the past I've spent up to $400 on a work dress simply because there were no other choices in a flattering cut or color. I have worn the same dresses for years, so the investment has been worth it. I am much more reluctant to lay out dollars for a special occasion dress that may get worn only once or twice, but have made desperate purchases of around $200 a couple of times.

Last year was an excellent one for fit and flare and I stocked up, looking carefully for sales. Most cost around $110 after discounts. I have since discovered Modcloth, which has a good selection of work suitable dresses in the right style for me (much more summer than winter though). Knowing that there is a reliable, reasonably priced source out there for non-sheath dresses means I will no longer feel compelled to buy pricey work dresses simply because they are the only ones out there suitable for me.

I spend between $100 and $200 for dresses a couple of times a year. Sometimes it's a good move, sometimes not.

Can't remember what the actual most expensive dress I've ever bought is. Probably $200, excluding the wedding dress (which was $400).

350 for wedding dress. Alterations were another 100. I have a couple of ~200 ball gowns for military balls

My daughter's prom dress $299 not including alterations.

Pretty skinny ass actually. I simply think it is asinine to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for a dress--no matter what one's income. Sadly, people get drawn into the hype of buying a certain label--usually to prove something. I have nothing to prove and hope those who may feel compelled to buy that ridiculously expensive dress (becuae after all "everyone" is doing it-- may see that it is not a reflection of wealth--just most likely debt.

HHI of over $2MM here, and I agree with you with one caveat: for a beautifully-cut, classically-tailored piece, I have spent up to $1000. However, those are very rare pieces for me (I have maybe 3?), and I wear them for years. But not a label whore.

Then again, my wedding dress was a $300 evening dress off the rack.
