The right in this country is much more radical than the left at this point.

This political nonsense matters almost zero once you get into high school. It is a rare kid who is super political in hs and sorry mom and dad the kids don't care if you don't want your child with the child whose parents voted republican and the other way around. I think for the younger years it can be an issue if parents are so invested in political stuff that they miss the things in common and so orchestrate friendships for their kids which is sad. I don't like parents like this because it seems like they picked a school for their own social life and not for education. Good advice is to just avoid politics..no need actually and I try to be friendly with all parents but not so chummy that this kind of stuff goes into play. Seems to work for our kids, they are invited over homes of families of varying political agendas and some, who like us, we don't know their politics and they don't know ours.

We are Democrats at SFS with two kids in upper school, and both have friends that lean Republican (or at least their families do)...and I think PP is correct that a lot of the students from Virginia lean conservative. But no one cares to be honest. Unless OP is a tea party member, I think any of the privates in DC would be comfortable fit.

The lack of self-perception here is quite telling. What this means is that the school is NOT conservative-friendly; I quite agree that the RINO establishment is welcome everywhere, especially professional political types.

And I question PP above regarding "extreme end of either party." It's not that symmetrical, in my view; a straight-up radical leftist, communist, or green would likely be made to feel welcome at all these schools. Much more welcome than a Tea Partier, I would expect, which is kind of perverse if you think about it.

A GOOD admissions officer, high shool or college, will be looking for diversity because they want diversity of discussion in the classroom. And a GOOD admissions officer will also know that well-connected Republicans and Liberals can do a lot for a school and that political winds change every few years. If a school dings you just because the parents are deemed conservative, then you don't want to be in that school.

I went to Maret and I remember who the OUTSPOKEN republicans and democrats were. There were two, in particular, who had regular and healthy debates in class. No one ostracized either child or family! In fact, it was considered "cool" to have an opinion either way and to speak openly about it.

OP, I don't think you should pick the school based on politics -- instead focus on where you see your child thriving. No one really cares about your politics as long as you are open to other views.

As long as my kid doesn't go to home with a family with guns in the house I could care less.

There are many liberals in NOVA. Not sure why everyone thinks the republicans come from VA.

Much more important how the teachers handle conservative students and whether they are open to "celebrate their diversity."

Schools that make conservative kids feel uncomfortable are not doing their jobs....

And per other posts, who care about parents's views??

Landon has teachers that are liberal (and moderate) and yet there is a balanced and welcoming feel for kids of all beliefs - which cannot be said for other schools. Kids and parents tend to be pretty split - liberal/moderate/conservative. Much more like the rest of America politically than many schools that are far to the left of most of America.
