$50 for one person hardly warrants resorting to a menu of rice and beans!

But, there are economies of scale when you're cooking for more people, and it sounds like OP is used to shopping at whole foods, and I'm just assuming that OP doesn't have the pantry full of food that many of us who are cooking for families have. $50 for 1 is definitely doable, but if someone isn't used to having a food budget, she would need to be careful not buy a couple expensive ingredients that will blow the budget (or a couple lbs of cherries that end up costing $!2).

You can till take advantage of economies of scale by eating some leftovers. No need to resorr to stealing condiment packets and buying $1 cheaper rice.

Go to bed. You don't have anything to offer here.

I would go to the library and check out FREE - for a few weeks - cookbooks.
I cut my grocery bill in half by not buying cereal, bread, or any baked goods. I bake my own.
Learn to cook...You can live for a week or two on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. You can live forever on a pot of beans, tortillas, a vegetable/fruit, and glass of milk but for the long haul..Learn to cook..

I'd purchase:
bread, tortillas
eggs
hamburger
potatoes or rice
cheese
bananas or another cheap fruit
lettuce & carrots or celery, etc to make salads
oatmeal
beans

I'd spend less than $50 on that stuff...it might get a little boring, but should last for the week!

And to the grass fed beef poster and fasting poster: thanks for your valuable contributions.

Hey, don't put me in the same category as the grass fed beef poster!

I just started the 5:2 diet and have noticed it is a good way to save money on food, is all. 2 days of mini-fasting cut back on the need to buy food those days, for sure.

Of course if you don't have to lose weight, it's not a good idea.
