same here. I don't know exact figures but money comes up every now and then in conversation, especially when someone's househunting or getting a new job. we compete over pretty much everything EXCEPT money because, you know, really, who gives a shit?

My SIL could have written this. We actually had her stop doing our taxes a few years back because our income jumped way up and I just really didn't want them knowing anymore. I think she and her husband make more than us anyway, which doesn't bother me. They work really hard. We are more lifestyle oriented.

Nobody but our accountant knows how much our HHi is and that is the way it will stay. People make all sorts of judgments where money is concerned, whether they talk about it to your face or not.

Oh, hell no. My sibling + spouse are still students (neither has a bachelor's degree yet) and have a much lower income than we do, so it's better not to discuss it with them.

My husband's sibling probably earns similar money to him, so I'm pretty sure he has told that sibling how much he makes. Actually, now that I think about it, some of his friends know how much he makes. I guess he's unusually candid about money.

They don't care, I don't care. So, nope.

Same here. My sister and I are identical twins, so we're pretty free with what we talk about, including money.

Speak for yourself. My husband has not shared our income with his identical twin. I certainly wouldn't share with my siblings, though they seem to think that we make a lot more than we do. One brother specifically told me that we make more than him and his wife and given that our combined income is less than $90k and we are not both working full time (they are), I think that is very unlikely. I don't want to tell him how much we make, but I wish that he didn't think we were loaded.

On the other hand, we definitely have considerably more net worth than either of my siblings. Our house has appreciated a lot more and we also had a significant inheritance that they are unaware of (well they are probably aware of an inheritance as they know we lost an in-law but no idea the extent of it).

More interesting to me is whether or not your parents know your HHI.... I think mine have a good idea but I've not told them. They also probably have a reasonable idea of our net worth.

Yes, my twin sister and I know exactly what the other makes (we're both feds). We cheered each other on when we got promotions/higher grade levels.

We just bought a house, mid range pricing for the DC metro area. I shared a link to the home when we bought and they just about died at the price.

I had to explain to them that the only reason we could afford a half million + home is because our housing allowance is X$ here in DC. Although it made more sense to them to hear this, they were just as appalled as they were when they saw how much the house cost.

They are from the Midwest and a half million dollar home there is a half million dollar home, not some 1960s-70s un renovated house.

And with a little more initiative, they can look up the total income of any military member - BAH, BAS, base pay, bonuses, etc. Just a matter of time! LOL
