If teenagers' opinions matter, my DC's informal poll of freshmen classmates at W-L found that kids loved Jefferson. Less ringing endorsement for Swanson (where DC went). (DH and I, however, were pleased with Swanson.)

TJ is considered less desirable than Swanson or Williamsburg, but over the past few years has become very popular because of the IB middle years program, and scores have gone up substantially. There are currently a fair number of students that transfer to the school for IB. I think Ashton Heights would make a good alternative to Lyon Village. The houses are generally larger south of Pershing, but the walk to Metro and Clarendon or Ballston would be longer.

Where would this be? Google maps says that the walking distance from Lee Harrison Shopping Center to Ballston Metro is 2.1 miles -- around 40 minutes.

I meant walk to East Falls Church Metro. It might be a hike from Harrison, but not that bad from Pokomoke or Quantico or Ohio Streets off Lee Highway.

Duh, neighborhood boundary lines are listed on the county website.

I love Lyon Village, but will probably never afford to live there. I'd agree that Ashton Heights is probably most similar.

If you don't need to be totally metro accessible, and the bus is sufficient, I think Donaldson Run is gorgeous. We live between Ballston and EFC and while I love our neighborhood, I don't think Bluemont, Bon Air, Dominion Hills, Madison Manor, Westover, etc... hold a candle to Lyon Village.
