Subject: Do you feel differently about Cate vs. Kate as a first name?
I really dislike nicknames as first names, ex: Kate, Beth, Jenny, rob, etc. just one opinion. If you love it then go for it

Love Cate, but only because I have a secret crush on Cate Edwards, who in my view is super classy in spite of her trashy father.

I'm Catherine, named after my Grandmother. My parents gave/used the same nn for me and she had, Cate. I don't think its pretentious and I love that I have a family name and family nn.
Personally I like Kate for Katherine/Katharine and Cate for Catherine/Catharine etc..........but thats just me being pretentious.

I'd choose Kate. Cate looks like Cat.

Use a k, the other is silly

Doesn't matter, either one. Both boring

My vote is for Kate.
If you were just asking about nickname, I wouldn't have a strong preference, but as a stand-alone name? Kate just seems more right to me. But I'm sure that's just because it's what I am used to (grew up with several stand-alone Katies and Kates, never met a Cate). Whichever you decide, it's a very pretty name!

Cate looks awkward. Kate is a great name - strong and classy.

I agree with most of the PPs. Use Catherine (whichever spelling) or Kathleen and call her Cate/Kate. I happen to prefer the former spelling over the latter.

By this, I mean "Kate" on the birth certificate, not Katherine.

DH and I love the name Kate, but we're having a boy. We would have done it as the formal name.

I like Cate but it will just be misspelled all the time.
I am confused when a person's name is Catherine but the nickname is Kate.

Kate is still short for Catherine. The nickname uses a K, no matter how the full name is spelled.
I am a Kate, no longer name. So it's not required if you like the name Kate, just go with that.
