I agree with pp. Once people get over the disappointment of their kid not getting into X,Y,Z college...they tend to really embrace wherever they end up and don't look back. So, it's ok to ask once the kid is in college not before.

10:34 I totally agree with this. I got so sick of people going on about ivies after I was asked what school I was attending. Luckily I could say it was one of the only places for my major and that usually got them to stop. Really it's the people who couldn't get in that are awed by ivies, not the people attending these schools. After freshman year, it got a little easier talking about different colleges. I'd approach families with kids who are sophomores in college or above.
