More foolish and stupid assumptions about what librarians actually do from the uninformed and clueless. Nevermind that they teach, budget, purchase, classify, supervise and evaluate sources/books/electronic subscriptions daily. They don't start out at that rate in Montgomery County, by the way. The $88,000 is after numerous years of work and a masters degree. I am amazed that you actually think $88,000 is alot of money. You must be young. Look up what many teachers make in Montgomery County and you will see the same salary after so many years of teaching and several degrees.
Boo-fucking-hoo! In the real world an employee at 7-11 does more than that before a Librarian even gets out of bed! People around here think that just because you have a masters degree that it automatically makes you smart. I know plenty of people in this area that have the degrees, but are just as unknowledgeable as people that don't. It also always amazes me how people deduct that longevity / tenure should automatically mean that you deserve a lot of money. Librarians are teachers who decided to take the easy way out. Ask a real teacher and you'll see what I mean!

Here's what to expect in the Washington DC Metropolitan area and there are exceptions, depending on circumstances.
Counter sales $30 - 60K
Inside sales $40 - 80K
Outside sales $100K + (this is also a dying breed)
Lighting $50 - 100K +
Gear $50 - 100K +
Of course, you could always be middle management and live off of the back of the employees actually doing the work. Most managers are worthless pieces of shit that come from other backgrounds, never worked their way up from the bottom, or are spoon-fed lackies that someone with experience has taken under their wing. Working for an Electrical Distributor is like being an ambulance chasing lawyer without the paycheck. You can have all of the experience in the world, but you'll never make any money unless you're in management or an owner. The key word to remember is GREED. All Electrical Distributors are full of GREED! They ALL lie to their employees, skim commissions, and tell you what you want to hear to lure you to work for them. There is a reason that no college graduates are taking jobs with Electrical Distributors.
Does anyone know what the going rate is these days for these positions?

Already happening. My friend got a masters in library science and hasn't been able to find a job in the field for years.
Temporary blip. once librarians ramp up to nw technology and technique they can be even more valuable in sifting through the endless mountains of data effectively. (web, lexis nexus, journal libraries, government open data, etc).
Librarian here. Yes, I am beginning to feel like a dinosaur but we are still needed. Keeping up with technology is key. However, I get by but I am not nearly as interested in technology as I should be. Lots of librarians retiring. Just a matter of whether or not they will be replaced with MLS librarians or support staff.
