I would want to know if something like this happened but only because it provides me with knowledge that I can use in negotiating the price.

As is evident from this discussion there are those who would not consider buying such a house. It would not bother me at all but knowing that the competition is likely to be restrained would enable me to price it accordingly. If this sounds mercenary, it is ..... but also, the pricing would be affected when I wanted to sell the house down the line and it was known to be the site of a murder/suicide.

Frankly, the tragedy that occurred would be a lot less bothersome to me as a potential buyer than buying a house with other drawbacks like the location, condition, floor plan, etc.

I lived in an apartment building in DC where someone was killed on my floor. Someone I met in the elevator, too.

Never gave it a bit of thought once the novelty wore off. You walk past murder sites every single day, you just don't know it.

I'm one of the ""sociopathic"" pps and it really blows my mind that people are so squeamish about this. The "karma" argument seems off, since nobody has mentioned minding if other types of violent crimes took place, or if the deaths were nonviolent.

For the buyers who'd want to know before making an offer: because you wouldn't make the offer if you knew, or because it affects the house's value?

If your relative committed suicide would you like it to be resurfaced everytime the house sold?

Why? Clearly some people care (and probably would like to know) and some don't and won't be bothered. As a buyer, I would be furious to find this out only after the fact.

+1. I would be so upset to find this out after the fact. I would never buy a house where a murder or suicide took place. I don't believe in ghosts, but it's still bad karma.

Why? I know there's no legal requirement to disclose this type of thing, but I would be seriously upset if I found this out down the line. Looks like there are lots of people for whom this doesn't matter. This way, the path is cleared for those who feel the same to buy the house.
