Our kids don't and probably never will have their own. Not until they are old enough to help pay for it, anyway.

But there are occasions where I'll let them use mine (iPhone, not iPad).

I think moderation is key, just like with anything else.

And the iPad/iPhone weren't around when they were little My firstborn too---but he was 10 when it first hit the shelves. It was another year before many kids had access to them.


My 8 year old and 5 up year old play on them 20-40 min a day. They play outside a ton. They both play many sports and have no behavior issues. They are very calm for boys and will also sit and play Legos for hours.

I'm with you. Basic phone for emergencies, (very) limited minutes with no texting/ internet, and that's it. Limited internet at home.

My dd is now in 6th grade. As of now she does not own devices of her own.She has limited access to mine. Lately she has been asked by her teacher to email classmates things and to type up papers. She has also been using sites like Khan academy for help in math. Lets face it we live in a world where tech is taking over and I really dont want my dd to be behind with technology. There are some really good apps and tools she can use on the iPad and instant Access to everything she needs is a plus..so i have given this some thought and decided to get her an ipad. However she is not allowed to put games on it and she will not be allowed to keep it in her room. It will be strictly used for educational purposes.
