When was this? US News ranks Chicago at #4, tied with Columbia. Both are big city schools with core curriculum and diverse student body.

Sorry, this was my source: http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20121003/NEWS13/121009985/university-of-chicago-falls-northwestern-rises-in-world-ranking Not us news. I'm glad to hear my alma mater is 4.

Hey, 10:45, the Common Core ("Common Chore") is supposed to be amazing. They seem like they do know how to have a good time with that massive annual Scavenger Hunt.

Top Ivy has always meant H,Y, P throughout our history and as evidenced by the rankings.

Followed in short order by Columbia and U Chicago tied at fourth, then MIT and Stanford tied at sixth (second and fifth places were skipped because ties at first and fourth places; Yale was technically in third place). Penn is 8, Dartmouth is 10, and Brown and Cornell are tied at 15 (!!!!).

But to answer the question about "Top Ivy," I think this is a DCUM construct similar to "Big 3". It's meaningless outside DCUM. Which means, friends, that we have the power (empowerment !), if we want it or even care enough about it, to define the term. Should it mean HYP? Should it mean the top half (top 4 of 8 ivies)? You decide, my friends! Although be warned that the rest of the world may ignore what we decide here....

That is because they know their students cannot hack it at the U of C. Only truly hardworking students who doesn't care for balanced life should go to Chicago.

Don't be silly. Both schools require their kids to work extremely hard. U of C might have a slightly higher nerd quotient, but most kids spend the weekend in the library at both places.

Maybe when they won a football game?

My kid is very smart, but I doubt he's driven enough to get into an Ivy. On the other hand, if he did, I am having trouble imagining the circumstances under which I'd recommend Columbia over Brown.

Columbia is viewed within the academic world as a serious academic institution and also has top graduate programs. Brown has a reputation as a school that chases donations and accepts children of the rich and famous who could not get into top schools on their own merits. It's Euro-trash quotient is very high.

+1.

Probably doesn't matter what you'd recommend -- your 18 y.o. will and should choose what s/he wants and needs because s/he's going there, not you. I, too, would have recommended Brown over Columbia, but my kids didn't see it that way. They wanted a big city, the core curriculum. and not so many preppies (even of the boho-chic variety). Turns out they're happy and thriving, so I have no complaints.

Good point (although again personally I can't imagine the core curriculum being a plus).

Believe me, I was surprised too, but it turns out they really love it!
