The academic system that we're in is absurd. OP, if you choose to keep your child in that current school make sure you seek other outlets for enrichment for you and your family so that the school isn't playing such a dominant role in your lives.

I'm sorry if my post seemed to be calling you names, it was attacking the absurdity of the experiences that we and our children continue to deal with today while at the same being told that racism doesn't exist at xyz school and that you're just making it up because you're stuck in the past.

Funny how most of our children are considered potential behavioral problems or eventually labeled with a learning disability and that we're the problem because we won't face it. Not to say that I haven't seen minority children with behavioral problems and different learning styles at my child's school.

It seems that every child is viewed using the same faulty set of lens.

Oh, please do get over yourself! The AAs at our private are treated like royals. Finally they go too far and get behind academically, then the parents play the race card. Gets really old. The reverse discimination is amazing. Parents stear clear because they know who will get the blame ... hint it is not "the white kid"

I'm sure each time you sign your child's annual contract you are aware that you do yourself and YOUR SON a major disservice by not completely trusting his school, rid yourself of your ancient thoughts and outlandish fears. I hope you provided the same advice for the white parents whose children plagued schools with cheating scandals and ruined reputations of girls with online ratings of who they could sleep with (and, oh, yes, gave points for the mother's as the hottest cougar). You should do yourself a favor and not throw stones as you definitely live in a glass house!

And if you don't think there's no 1950s behavior today, tell that to the AA who watched the President be mocked by whites in black face, called a coon, accused of being Hitler, etc. Give me a break. Please!!

To OP - This is an annonymous forum and no indicitive of the how most parents in independent schools feel. I understand your concern. You and your children need to understand that you are a very important part of our community. I have been around for a long time and we are a community and it does not matter if you go to school A and I go to school B. It does not matter if I play sports against your team or my son did not get accepted to your school. Maybe we do go to the same school. What matters is that your family and your children understand that they were accepted to the school and it does not matter your race or financial status. You are very important part of the community.

Is there prejudice still in our world? Yes unfortunately. And it sucks.

I had a good friend in your situation. Keep your head down, get a good education, stay out of trouble and for god sakes don't get counseled out because you are on FA. I could not believe they felt that way - it hurt my soul. Fortunately I was friends with somebody that could make a difference and I explained their feelings. This was a few years ago but the administration is so caring and inclusive they could not believe that this straight A, wonderful kid felt this way. But, he did not feel like a straight A student - he was working his a^^ off in fear of making a B. (because he was on financial aid) He did not feel like part of the community, his life was out of balance.

The administration set him up with a mentor in the school. He become more confident and was able to get everything out of his education from that incredible school. I urge you to find 1 administrator you trust and share your feeling and work through this.

You are an important part of our community and you need to feel that way. You need to take advantage of all that is offered at the school. My child is better off with you in our lives.

If you really think one administrator "has total control over your child's future" I feel sorry for you. Good god, what hyperbole. Does the headmaster take the PSAT or SAT for your child? Do you think heads of schools spend their free time phoning college admissions people trying to keep specific students out of school? Do you think college admissions people everywhere would care? (Remember when BU took the girl who had murdered her mother after Harvard revoked the acceptance?) Do you really believe which of the many top notch colleges/universities your child attends will make that much difference? Does the headmaster control how your child does in college or grad school?

I hate this sort of overdramatic hyperbole. I guess if you pay $35 grand a lot of people need to believe that there is a man or woman in a wood-paneled room controlling their child's future who must be propitiated like a dark and ancient spirit.

Sorry but you are the one who is over-dramatizing. The statement of "control over your child's future" while not explicitly stated was implied to mean at the school. Unlike public schools, private schools have no obligation to enroll any child. In that sense they do have control over your child's future at that school. For parents who live in areas with crappy public schools it can seem like total control. White parents aren't any less likely to feel this squeeze than black parents. It is the nature of the private school environment.
