It's pronounced Tara like Tar (rhymes with Star with American accent) - a. Sorry, my mid atlantic accent makes it rhyme with Laura which it might not for other people!

You're going to have to correct people's pronunciation no matter how you spell the name.

Might as well keep the spelling simple then, and go with the more common "Tara".

I think PP pronounces Laura the British way - how we would pronounce Lara.

I also work with Arabs so I get the Arabic pronunciation at work. The message is - be flexible, pick a pronunciation and be prepared to correct people lol.

Follow up on my post above, no one will ever get the Indian T sound correctly but assuming you just want a hard T, even that's a challenge.

My name is Tara (rhymes with Laura)! It's Indian. People call me Tara (rhymes with Sara) constantly, even after I correct them or introduce myself as Tara (rhymes with Laura). I am half Indian and it means "star." Also common in parts of the Middle East, especially Iraq and I think Iran, meaning roughly the same thing. Just be prepared to correct people... constantly. I have always thought maybe if my parents spelled it with two R's that would help? Tarra?

To clarify, there are no English words with "aa" in the middle of them.

Double aa would take on the air sound OP doesn't want. Example: Aaron.

Actually that's not true. There are plenty of words in English with "ee" in them as in 'Meera" but none with "aa" as in Taara.
