Sweetie, I lived in Maryland for over 30 years of my life and can honestly tell there are are shitty grocery stores in MD too! I now live in VA and the grocery stores are not what differentiate the two states. Clearly with your lack of knowledge you live in a bubble!

+1 I lived in Russia for a year. Saw snow upon snow dumped on St. Petersburg. Never lost power.

What is so special about Maryland?!?!?! Bethesda is about as characterless as it gets.

More importantly, the comparison isn't Bethesda to all of Northern Virginia. If NoVA is the Virginia suburbs of DC, let's compare NoVA broadly against the Maryland suburbs of DC. That's Montomery, Prince George's and Howard (as comparable to Loudon in terms of distance and rural but developing nature).

NOW let's compare the two in terms of attractiveness, walkability, styles of houses and commercial development.
