I don't think the person that posted the list has issues. I think the list is actually pretty accurate. I meet nine of the characteristics on the list as well and growing up was teased for being a nerd and smart etc. I fully embrace my cornballness but know full well that a lot of black folks do have serious issues about what it means to be black.

PP, I really appreciate your post. Some of this discussion reminds me of a friend of my husbands who married a registered 5/5ths Native American woman. She later received a letter in the mail from the tribe reducing her to 1/5th status for marrying a white guy. Is some of this story apocryphal? Maybe. But we have all head of similar issues of judgment in communities.

I agree that the anti-gay language in the ghetto is shocking. It's hard to be a gay kid in the ghetto (why they band together or keep it under the radar). Equally hard to be a nerd. So many forced to lead 'double lives'.

The odds of being academically successful in the ghetto are slim. The odds of meeting white people (to date or marry) are low. The coolness and success accruing to the modern American professional gay communities (San Francisco, Dupont Circle, Ellen...) remote. Maybe it made the students I worked with feel better to bash academic success or black/white couples.

The cornball brother comments that speak to a lack of "coolness" I get. Every community makes loving fun of its dweebs. Think about the endless humor provided by the 'mullet haircut'. But there is a serious, threatening, political element to the comments as well. I am stretching to find the white equivalent...maybe being a white Republican professor on a small liberal arts campus?

As PP said, the threat of losing your 'black card' for not falling in line. I think B. Cosby is very cool. I also think he's a cornball hero for some of the serious issues he has taken on. As we have seen with RG III--falling out of line can lead to banishment!

I disagree with your original list. Only the bolded (and they must be in combination) will earn your traitor label. It takes an extra dose of goofy (which transcends race) to be called a cornball.

Also, the most crucial sin is to admit that you want to be an individual that is judge by your own merits. You don't want to be attached nor carry the burden of race on your shoulders. This is the nail in the coffin. Some Black people will forever despise you and reject you. Individuality versus the tribe mentality is like a cardinal sin in the black community.

And the list goes on. Honestly, if you are a black person in America you're not allowed to be a freethinker or an individual. You must adhere to the tribal thinking that is in the black community. Those of us who think or behave any differently, are called, "Oreos, House N-word, Whitey, Traiter, and many other vile names. I've suffered more racism from my own people than any other group on the face of this earth. So, I'm not surprise that this young gentleman (football player) was called a cornball. Blacks are vicious to other blacks who don't share their belief systems. It's called intra-racism. Some black folks hate to see other blacks who have assimilalted into American culture. They rather for us to "keep it real" and fight for the cause (meaning reject success and anything that has to do with white American culture).

Us cornball blacks are feared and hated by other blacks because they feel rejected by us. They think we are going abandoned them and conspire with white folks about their destiny. I know this sounds crazy, but most black ethnocentrists have this warped, "Us against them" type of mentality.

The PC nonsense is killing me! Look, some of us black folks know that we're not accepted by other blacks because "we're different". We just have to go with the flow and pretend that blacks are not as racists because only white people are. It's insane because this poor football player is being verbally harrassed and it's accepted because the perpetrator is black. Oh ok. I read through/watched the Rob Parker thing and when he started to ascribe why RG3 was a 'cornball brother' and used evidence like white gf, republican....it seemed to me that what he was saying was that RG3 is a sellout and looking for validation from 'those people'.

Didn't strike me as Rg3 being 'uncool' but being as what malcolm x called, 'a house negro'. Having rewatched Rob Parker i do think inside he would've wanted to call RG3 the latter when looking at the 'evidence' Rob Parker uses to justify his opinion.
