Not an outlier...all of DH's friends do. He is not even the highest among them. They are in their early 40s. They are software consultants. Formatting for big companies--Weyerhauser, Oil companies, Coca-Cola, Defense, etc. SAP.

First, I am an actual system administrator who manages the systems and networks of a small group. When I worked on-site for the agency managing a larger group, I made more, but based on various situations, I was laid off from the contract when it downsized. I took this smaller job for a pay cut and the smaller group, lower demands, etc have been priceless since I had kids.

That said, I work in federal contracting and there is NO ONE in my agency doing this that makes more than about $150-165K. The only ones that I know in my field even in private who make over $200K are the ones that are in banking and while I might have done that in my younger years, the hours and on-call are h*ll. Yeah, those are people who repeatedly are paged at 3am and told to be in the office within 45 minutes because such-and-such is down and has to be up within 2 hours or bad things happen to financial transactions.

Your husband is in IT consulting to large, expensive private corporations. Unlikely that he does hands on maintenance of systems. He's more likely a design and development consultant who actually develops the new systems that are going to be proposed and implemented in the future. That's a far cry from what I do. And, frankly, I wouldn't want most of those jobs either. How many hours does your husband put in for that $400K salary? And how often do you and the kids see him? And how much does he work at home? And how much time does he have to help around the house?

-Where did you graduate from and what was your rank or G.P.A.? A California State University. No idea what my GPA was, honestly. I had a couple great semesters, but most were not. I had to work full time (40+ hours/week--shift work with a VERY inconsistent schedule) while going to school for all years except one. Made it hard to study/stay awake during class. The one year I didn't work full time, I worked 20 hours a week on campus, with a consistent schedule. That was the only year I got A's.

I actually had a neighbor tell me when she first met me "you can't be a scientist, pretty girls don't go into science'. I am a scientist that works with attonreys all day long---just like scientists--they come in every shape, form, race and varying degrees of sociability. Some I absolutely love..and others...blah.

I work in a fed agency that is primarily PhD / scientist /engineer types. I beg to differ. A more awkward population of humans is not to be found anywahere.

This. I'm thinking of an agency where most of the normal looking ones aren't really all that smart; they were just brought up to be confident and aggressive. And many tend to despise attorneys publicly but secretly want to be one.
