Once again spreading fear before getting all the facts. From CNN story today:

Here is the state dept advisory on travel to mexico. They have no warning on travel to Riveria Maya.

If you regularly travel to Baltimore or DC I cannot understand your hesitation to travel to a RESORT town in Mexico. Few people vacation in Juarez

From the news article: A Palm Springs television station reported that the family had been traveling through Chihuahua, Mexico, and passing through the rough bordertown of Ciudad Juarez. U.S. relatives were reported to be living in the Coachella Valley.

I don't think anyone here plans on traveling to those cities.

there has been drug-related violence on the highway between the cancun airport and playa del carmen, the hotel zone in cancun is controlled by the zetas. basically the hotels pay off the cartels to leave the tourists alone. so, yes the hotels are "safe." also, the cops -- 95% corrupt.
i had a friend in guanajuato -- she was there visiting. she was with friends eating at a cafe when they heard gun shots. they all hit the ground and the restaurant corralled them all to the back of the restaurant where they were for 2 hours.
and don't forget the two USG employees who were ambushed (by cops!) outside of mexico city. (not the ICE agents who were killed.)
yes, it is a beautiful country with wonderful people, but it is NOT SAFE AT ALL.

There are over 200,000 narco-related murders in Mexico during this the Calderon Preidency. Beloved or not, doesn't sound like much of a vacation having to look over my (and my childrens) shoulders constantly.....

Thank you for posting this. I lived in Mexico for several years and I just don't have the energy to refute all of these horrible things on this thread about my beloved Mexico.

Oaxaca, Chiapas, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Taxco, Tepotzlan, Patzcuaro, I can go on an on about all the lovely places and people.

Yes, I would return in a heartbeat and plan on going when the airfare goes down a little. Mexico is a lovely country with charming people and excellent food.

Have you ever driven outside of any resort town in Mexico? I will never forget some of the poverty I have seen there. San Juan is a dump, but some of the resorts are lovely and it is no where near the scale of despair as in Mexico.

Agreed; San Juan is a dump and not terribly safe either....
